Grahame has over 40 years experience in the furniture industry. Upon leaving school in 1970, Grahame started work at a large contract furniture company as an apprentice in cabinet making and furniture design. After qualifying, he remained at the company until 2011, attaining the position of Works Manager in 1991. His work with designers and architects on both bespoke and large contracts, in addition to his knowledge of design, research and development and construction techniques give Boatman Furniture a solid understanding of the process of furniture production.

How does the process work?

It is often helpful to gather some ideas together before getting in contact. This can be in the form of cuttings from magazines or brochures, or links from websites and social media. Some possible areas to think about include:

Material selection, cabinet hardware, material colour and finish as well as overall cabinet design.

The first step is to arrange a meeting with you, at a convenient time and place. This can be at either our workshop or your home, where we can discuss your project’s requirement and develop some ideas.  From this initial meeting it will be possible to create some preliminary working drawings, together with an estimate of the project’s cost.

If you are happy with the initial drawings and projected budget, a detailed design brief can be developed. This involves the creation of detailed construction drawings, meeting with suppliers to obtain samples, and possibly additional meetings with you to discuss any further issues. Due to the time involved in this process, there will be a small charge for these services. However, this will be refunded in full if the project goes ahead.

Once a specification has been agreed upon, and final price agreed, a formal order can be made. At this stage we ask for a payment of 50% of the final contract price, to book a production slot.

We build and finish your project, keeping you updated on it’s progress. If desired, we can post photo updates using social media so you can follow the build.

Once the project has been finished, we will ask you to come to our workshop and approve it. At this stage, a payment of 40% of the contract price will be invoiced, which is due on installation or collection.

The product is delivered and installed, or packaged securely for collection if you prefer. Once you are fully satisfied with the project, we will invoice you for the remaining 10% of the contract price.

Shortly after the project has been completed, we will call you to ensure you are fully happy with your bespoke furniture, and to discuss any queries that you may have. Remember that we are only a phone call away.

What our clients say

“It’s perfect for me. I don’t have to lift the bags of animal feed to get them in the cupboards but I can still get to them from the top. The feed prep area with lighting has everything to hand. The tongue and grove style matches the existing panels and the units double as seating in summer. The hinges and drawer runners are really good quality and can cope with heavy loads. So often with shop bought units I have found that the drawer runners break very easily.”

Ms C • Cambridge

“The radiator cover does a fantastic job of hiding the ugly radiator in our kitchen, and the shelf on the top comes in very handy.”

Mrs B • Saffron Walden

“The drawers underneath my bed are spacious and great for storage. My room has a lovely homely feel now, and I would definitely recommend you as you were a great help from the start. By choosing the paint, wood type and finish it allowed me to create what I wanted.”

Miss G • Saffron Walden

“The pull out units under the stairs fit perfectly. Ideal for welly boot storage.”

Ms C • Cambridge

“Our new table is fantastic. Lots of room for storing larger items in the chest compartment, and a dozen drawers for smaller things.”

Mr B • Saffron Walden

“I love my new linen cupboard. It looks very striking and I can fit so much more in it than when it was just open shelves. The drawer runners are much better that ones I have had before. Thanks also for fixing the broken floor board while you were here – I have been meaning to get that done for ages.”

Mrs C • Cambridge

“The wardrobe is a great space for all of my clothes, especially the longer section for my dresses. I will happily recommend your services, as from the start to the finish of the room all of your advice and guidance was brilliant.”

Mrs G and Miss G • Saffron Walden

“Lovely! It really brightens up the dining room and was made to perfectly match the theme in my kitchen. I have so much more storage space in this room now.”

Ms C • Cambridge

“The office is fantastic. The design is nothing like I have seen before. There is so much room for all our our files, books and literature on the shelves, we have not filled it all yet. The deep drawers are great, they allow us to store lots of things out of the way, and the soft-closing feature stops them slamming closed.”

Mr B • Great Chesterford

“The bin storage unit is great. I love how you made the style, colour and handles match the rest of my existing kitchen. The shelves are really smart and so useful! The saloon ‘bunny’ door is great as I can go in and out of the kitchen carrying things but still keep the rabbits out.”

Mrs H • Cambridge

“Our daughter loves her drawers which have been expertly designed and made for under her little bed.  They are easy to put together and, even better, they are easy for her to use as they roll in and out smoothly. Could not have asked for better quality.  Really, really pleased.”

Miss C • Hilperton, Trowbridge, Wiltshire

“We are so pleased with this beautifully designed toy box which we commissioned for our son.  Not only does it look fantastic, but it is light-weight, very strong and sturdy and also finger-friendly! It came with adorable animal plaques which can be attached to it to add to our animal theme which we have chosen for his bedroom.  Thank you Boatman Furniture. ”

Miss C • Hilperton, Trowbridge, Wiltshire

“Thank you for the radiator cover. I love how you matched the existing architrave blocks in the room in the design.”

Mrs B • Saffron Walden

“The radiator cover is fantastic. It’s narrow enough to allow you to walk past it, but allows you to keep things on top of it. I love the way it matches the mirror.”

Mrs B • Saffron Walden

“Boatman Furniture took my rough designs and came up a really practical office solution for me.  I cannot thank them enough.”

Mrs B • Saffron Walden

“Really pleased with my cloakroom radiator cover – it hides an ugly radiator. Excellent service”

Mrs B • Saffron Walden

“Thank you for the radiator cover. It not only hides the radiator, but the way it has been designed matches the rest of the room.”
